I Love Thy Hood just reached their one year anniversary! Thanks to founder, Matthew George, Philadelphia businesses are signing on to brighten up our streets one trash can at a time.

Currently, the Philadelphia Sanitation Department is suffering blows from Covid-19 and struggling to maintain healthy employees. As a result, trash is building up on our sidewalks and streets. This is especially prevalent in underserved neighborhoods on the outskirts of Center City, where public trash cans become scarce or non-existent. It is all of our responsibility to implement sustainable practices that keep our environment safe & clean for our residents. Share with your community an alternative solution by supporting a genuine cause that strives to instill pride in our neighborhoods.

While living in Kensington, my mom and I would dedicate an entire afternoon to picking up garbage just in the one block radius from my home. Walking around collecting garbage with trash bags, we could easily fill 2-3 bags per block.
Not only is it a lack of city official effort to supply trash receptacles in every neighborhood, but the problem lies deeper and it starts in the home. If parents teach their children to respect their neighborhoods and environment and actually explain where the trash blows when it leaves their hand and falls to the ground, we might raise a generation of humans who think twice before flicking that empty water bottle.

When I heard about Matthew’s initiative to supply neighborhood street cans with a dope logo and beautiful message, I jumped at the opportunity to secure one for my home residence in Germantown. After seeing a significant difference in just a few weeks my partners and I decided to acquire one for our headquarters at Viking Mills in East Kensington- just 2 blocks from the El train, where tons of commuters pass through on a daily basis. My opinion, the city should really consider investing in the Ilovethyhood cans and distributing them everywhere in the upcoming fiscal year!
